About Melissa Tohlakai
I’ve always been that girl — the one with charcoal-smudged hands and a head full of wild dreams, sketching horses in every spare notebook I could find. Art and nature were my first languages, and horses — with their grace, power, and soulful eyes — were my oldest muses.
I grew up in Australia, “horse-mad,” pouring myself into every painting I could create. When it came time to choose a path after high school, I stood at a crossroads: art school — or equine science. I chose horses. I lived horses — studious anatomy in daylight, pastel strokes and intuitive mark-making by night. I graduated with qualifications in Horse Husbandry and Management, and spent years working professionally with horses while still painting with heart and soul. That deep, lived understanding of their form and spirit now infuses every portrait I paint.
I’ve been honoured to show work in exhibitions, win awards, and fill private and corporate collections. But the truest reward has always been commissions — the beautiful alchemy that happens when I meet a horse and an owner, hear their story, and bring that connection to life on paper. There’s nothing quite like seeing a familiar eye captured with pigment and watching someone recognize the unique spirit of their beloved companion in every stroke.
When I’m not in my studio, you’ll find me barefoot in the wild — tending my off-grid homestead in Arizona, or teaching and supporting others on their own holistic wellness journeys. My work as a holistic health practitioner — rooted in nutrition, herbal medicine, and deep listening — reflects my belief that creativity and wellbeing are intertwined; that tending your body, your environment, and your art enriches everything you do.
I make art because beauty heals us. I practice holistic health because connection heals us. And I choose this life — off-grid, grounded in nature, in community, in heartfelt simplicity — because it allows both my creative spirit and my healing heart to thrive.
Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here.
